I had a strange issue come to light tonight when working on a client’s site.
The FireFox3 I was working with doesn’t usually have problems so I’m happy coding and testing with it then testing later on in other browsers. But apparently this one page had issues with FireFox3 on a Mac. The checkboxes were floating off to the left, completely unacceptable.
Hours passed trying to fix this issue and only coming back to it later and using trusty FireBug did I find the problem.
The checkbox in question had a width set to 20px, and on the PC FF3 it looked fine as I was positioning it absolutely. But with a Mac it was far to the left. The FireBug showed me it was inheriting a property from higher up the chain – min-width set to 160px. The PC was ignoring this and using the width, the Mac was following the min-width over the width.
Resetting the min-width for this new unordered list checkbox fixed it, allowing the positioning to be reset and let the page display as designed under both OS’s with FF3. Strange bug, and it took a while to find.
So I might dig around and find the appropriate forum somewhere and report this. Anyone got any ideas where that is?
