Identifying Fonts

I think one of the most difficult bits of being a web designer is finding the right font for the job. It can be so frustrating, especially when you come to the realisation that there are tens of thousands of fonts, and many hundreds can be alike. It makes it a daunting task, especially to identify a font from a sample.

People who don’t deal with fonts on a daily basis think there must be some magical database where you say ah yes, double story ‘a’ with serifs, that’s this one font. No, there’s thousands. Take your pick.

At work I found a useful tool to use was , you can simply identify a font with questions about the whole alphabet or even more importantly, tell Identifont that you have a word or two and it’ll ask questions specifically about the letters in those words. Mind you, it comes up with a lot of choices at the end of course, but it does narrow it down.

I try and stay with the default when doing web pages, not every computer has all the thousands of fonts on their computer.

I do however have a crap load of fonts for my Photoshopping.

I’ll type out something and scroll through each one till I find the one that fits best in the project. Unless it’s a theme like Garfield or something, then I’ll just grab a Garfield Font.. :p

Yeah I have loads, but at work we have thousands and it’s laborious going through them all.

The general ones are good to stick with, Arial, Tahoma, Verdana, Helvetica, Georgia, etc.,

True true! I once spent 4 hours looking for the right font. I found that site awhile back.

rich says:

Yeah it’s getting busy there too, I went yesterday and got the ‘too busy’ page!
