Bonfire Night Nearly Here!
Wednesday November 1, 2006
It’s been quite some time since I attended any bonfire night let me tell you. The US doesn’t have one (of course, why would they?) and although Halloween certainly has the party atmosphere, Thanksgiving doesn’t have any bonfires.
I’m looking forward to it to tell the truth, I always had a good time at them when I was a kid. I thank God mind you, that the authorities that be in this area haven’t banned the bonfire as being an environmentally polluting event or too costly (the word nincompoop comes to mind to describe that particular group of ‘elders’).
For those of you who don’t know about it, learn about Guy Fawkes and his nefarious plot to kill the King and Parliament in 1605. We Brits celebrate the uncovering of the plot and his subsequent hanging drawing and quartering (bloodthirsty crew aren’t we?) on November 5th, Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night.
Anyway, the fireworks have already started with people letting off their own in anticipation of the big night (probably Saturday anyway, and not the Sunday). The night will probably be bitterly cold as it usually is, but lots of good junk food and toffee apples ![]()
