Now that’s an original idea eh? Wait, no, doesn’t that sound like the old ‘rates’ system that the UK used to have? Yes! Wow, and you’d think that Labour would be happy with the current blanket system, given that their roots are in the equality for all belief system.

To be honest, I do like the idea of basing taxes upon the area, the facilities available, the crime rate in the area etc., I’m a bit biased though, since this is one of the sleepiest areas in the UK, few people, very rural and agricultural, and no majorly large cities (Lincoln is the biggest in Lincolnshire?).

Interestingly enough however, the Tories feel differently, as from this BBC article:

… Caroline Spelman, the shadow secretary of state for local government.

She said: “If Labour introduce this invasive system fully in England, your council tax bill will depend not just on the features of your house, but whether you have good schools or clean streets, and whether you have low or high rates of crime.

“This is the hallmark of an oppressive and greedy government - finding ever more stealth ways to tax working families and pensioners, and trampling over privacy when it suits them.”

Doesn’t seem too wrong to me. If you live in a city with lots of features, facilities, public transport (which barely exists here in the sticks), good schools etc., you would expect to pay more than in the countryside. Oppressive and greedy government? Hmm, I hate to say it, but this is something I agree with Labour about. God help me.
