Porous Borders
Monday September 25, 2006
Since I lived in the US for a while, I heard a great deal about the now-constant debate over border security. One can see why the US politicians might have it in their mind as something important, given 9/11 etc.,
So the question arises, why aren’t they doing something about it? Talk. Yes, the inevitable talking. Am I delusional? Am I just waffling on about something that doesn’t exist? Is the border with Mexico secure enough?
My friend, Diane, lives in Texas. She has first-hand experience of this. Perhaps we should talk about it some more, get some more exposure to this problem, because if we can think and talk about it you can sure bet that al-Qaeda is talking about it. Wouldn’t you think?
Diane’s article on this issue, Guarding the Borders, highlights the problems that local people feel about the problem. More importantly she points out what THEY want, rather than what the government thinks people should have. A fence isn’t going to cut it, more people watching the borders is.
