I had to reinstall my laptop last night, using the Windows 2000 Professional disc I carry with me. I like Windows 2000 Pro because it’s stable and I have barely ever had a problem with it. It IS becoming a little dated though, and with the imminent release of Vista I figured this might the last time I install Win2K.

So I did so, it took all of 10 minutes, quick in comparison to many installs these days. Happy as a clam was I, that is until I decided I wanted to get online with my new install. I put the Tiscali disc in, and boom, error.

I thought to myself, so what do I need to fix this? No explanation of the error, just a general grey box and a beep, Tiscali has generated errors etc., Since I can’t get online to download updates and patches, doesn’t do me much good now, does it?

It surprises me, I would have thought that the install discs of any broadband provider would be compatible with basic installs. If there is no access to the Internet after all, how can an OS be upgraded to suit the install disc’s software?
