Meet Mary McCarthy, the retired fired CIA analyst.
Why was she fired? Because she revealed the CIA prisons in eastern Europe, that err, don’t exist. I guess that by firing her, the CIA have “inadvertently” revealed that they do exist. But the question is, as an analyst, how did she know about the prisons (which didn’t exist mind you)? The Booman Tribune has a good post on that, about her attending seminars for retiring officers where she might have learned more about the secret prisons.
She was a high level intelligence analyst however, and close to retirement age. Was she a sacrificial lamb, just following orders to ‘fess up to the leaking? Read Larry Johnson‘s take on this, who knew her and worked for her at the CIA.
Stop the ACLU has a post about the Washington Post editor who has an excuse for leaking sensitive government information, form your own opinions on it. I tend to agree with them, his reasoning is asinine.
And, the Captain’s Quarters has a fascinating post wondering whether the secret prisons line might just have been a sting operation, as does Flight Pundit. Read it, and read it again. I liked it. They both point out, as does Just One Minute that Mary McCarthy contributed to Kerry’s election fund.
Personally I’m of the mind that if you work for an intelligence agency and swear to uphold your country’s secrets, you should do so. Being caught leaking them, selling them, passing them on, is the worst betrayal you could make. That’s why it’s called treason. Buh-bye Mary.
