Maybe it’s just me, but I thought that people who were in custody and on trial, had no choice over where they went. Kept in cells, transported everywhere in shackles/handcuffs, and guarded at all times, how in God’s name can Saddam Husseinwalk out” on his trial?

According to the BBC though:

The former Iraqi leader then launched into a vigorous exchange with the judge, telling him that he wanted to leave and be tried in absentia.

“I want to leave the court,” Saddam Hussein demanded of the judge, who in turn ordered the former leader out.

Well I guess that actually makes things easier. If he’s not there he can’t have any more of his bandstanding, haranguing the judge and getting attention from the news networks. This new judge however, does seem to be a bit harder than the one who recently quit. That’s ok I guess, given that he will undoubtedly be found guilty…

Anyway, as a big of humour, you should see SondraK’s article about this, the pictures are priceless :)
