Yes you heard it right, there are people that think that young women SHOULD be subjected to the virus that causes cervical cancer. Apparently it is better to practise abstinence than to be vaccinated against the human papilloma virus, because using a vaccine to prevent a sexually-transmitted disease could condone sexual activity. Very smart people these ultra-conservatives, clearly disease is a powerful weapon to use against the population.
Frankly I would rather have the vaccine and save 3,700 women’s lives a year, and use what should already exist – a good sex education program. To rely on abstinence programs belies a prime force in human existence – hormones. Young men and women, no matter how abstinent they may feel, will not always be abstinent.
I am not the only one who has brought this up: Pandagon has a lively thread, The Evil Petting Zoo asks a very good question – what will they do when we develop a vaccine for HIV?, and Sonician’s Accumulation wonders if cervical cancer magically disappears when you get married?, and finally, Pop+Politics asks if the social conservatives would feel differently if the vaccine saved the lives of men?
