The bane of sailors for centuries, carved onto the prows of Viking ships, woodcut artwork showing sea creatures overwhelming tiny sailing vessels from the Middle Ages - the Giant Squid has struck again. This eery picture was taken at the depth of 900 meters, a fishing line strung out that the squid attacking (and got caught up in). This is one of the few pictures of this beast, they are rare beyond belief.

One of the beastie’s tentacles was caught in the (giant?) hook, and was ripped free, so now the scientists have something to play with at least. Apparently the squid surprised the researchers, as they weren’t thought to be too aggressive.
