Computer Crash
Tuesday September 27, 2005
Yesterday my computer crashed. I am reminded of Mel’s post…
*sounds of keyboard being smashed repeatedly on the table*
Soooo, last night I spent hours trying to fix it, only to realize the SCSI hard drive had become corrupted. I decided to opt for the easy way out, re-format and install Win 2K. Sure I lost months of bookmarks but I have an old copy, and I am slowly trying to move all my major bookmarks to ProtoPage anyway.
Today, I spend hours re-installing software, uploading all the web work I’ve been doing for the past few months, and getting my computer back on its legs. I think I’m more angry at losing all the development work more than anything, but I DO have a habit of uploading something as soon as I’m finished with it, so at least it’s online where I can get it back again.
Annoying…

You know it’s a bad crash when formatting and spending hours putting everything back on it is “the easy way out”

heh
When was it, the second… third major crash (?) when I learned to keep ALL my own work backed up with multiple copies on multiple drives/media…
Oh, maybe it took me four…
*LOL*
Slow learner. Yep. That’s me.
I now have old hard drives with usable data in ESD bags/foam packing filed away with floppy disks, CDRs, etc. My only problem? heh Well, between hardcopy indexes and indexes on disks…
But really all I file permaently is correspondence, business records, tax records, original music (sheet music and audio), photos…
Actually, since I usually reformat and re-install just about annually, plonking back onto hard disk any reasonably current work, what you’ve just been through sounds about like… late December.
(Oh, I don’t do all the computers on our lil network annually; only the ones that get the most use. Besides, December’s a good time for me to install newer, bigger hard drives, and “migration” software… doesn’t.)

I second your choice of Win2K. Oh, BTW, I consider Win2K to be the best Windows so far. The XP comps here have been more trouble than even the old Win98 comps.

You know I used to use Win2k all the time, and in fact my back up computer and laptop both have win2k. This recent bout of my testing with XP clearly is the wrong thing. I dearly hope that Longhorn is somewhat decent… but I think for the time being I’ll stick with what I know, 2K.
