Google Instant Messenger
Tuesday August 23, 2005
A lot of people are a bit anxious, and perhaps for the wrong reasons, to see Google’s much talked about Instant Messenger (IM). Is it almost ready? Do we have evidence of the service already? Over at Neowin they have a post about this. Today, in the LA Times, there is an article about the upcoming Instant Messenger launch from Google (called Google Talk?), so clearly we are the verge right now, just waiting to see if this is true.
But this is no ordinary IM service designed to compete directly with Yahoo!, AOL, or MSN. No, Google is going one step further, allowing users to chat with microphones and headsets too, which will put Google in direct competition with Skype. But like the LA Times article mentioned, Google faces a battle in trying to persuade current users of IM programs to switch to theirs. And obviously, IMers talk to other IMers on the same network, which is another obstacle.
This being said, this is still speculation. Google already has IM programs that it obtained through other purchases; Picasa comes with Hello - a simple talk program for the photo service, and Meetro from Meetroduction LLC, which Google is supposedly buying. Fueling the speculation is the introduction of Google’s Desktop Search in which was found: “included in the program files a new protocol: google_im://…”
Google is not afraid of launching into an already crowded market (such as the Search market), and has done well doing so in the past. Google’s dynamism and willingness to try new technologies, and embrace them quickly, has served them well in the past and is likely to do so in the future. I will give Google’s IM software a try when it comes out, will you?
Update (Aug 24th): Google Talk has been released!

You know what would be really kewel.
If the next IM that came out would be cross compatable with other IM’s like Yahoo, MSN and soo on.
I like the Yahoo personally because the one I have plays music and you CAN chat through audio mic with multiple users. And you don’t have to pay for them funny little animations like MSN does because Yahoo supplies them Free. But then again, that’s Microsux for you.
I’m curious to see what Google is going to have. Even though I’m a little PO’d at them for closing my Adsence account because of so called invalid clicks.

Well they do have program that do that for you, like Trillian. I tried it for a while but honestly I like msn and stick with it. If Google does come up with something, I’ll give it a try though, since I use them so much anyway.

Actually, I used to do something quite like that with Yahoo Messenger, though it was a tad cumbersome–a kinda PTT voice chat, more like walkie talkies than phone.
Still it was useful. Now, though, with Packet8 phone service (or Vonage), broadband users can have real LD phone service for $20/month, unlimited call times, voicemail, caller ID, conference calling (well, 3-way) etc.
Voice chat that requires the other person have the same app/service just isn’t as cool any more.
