Moon Shot for $100 Million
Wednesday July 27, 2005
You know just as we kick start our nascent shuttle program back into gear and celebrate being back in the comforting grasp of well, nothing actually, the Russians announce that they’re planning on ferrying people around the moon for $100 million. Good god, the Russians are in financial difficulties with their Space Agency but they’re planning tourist trips around the moon? I’m not knocking them though, they HAVE been supporting our efforts to get to the ISS, porting food and supplies back and forth, and their Soyuz capsules doing the labour are among the most reliable to vehicles. Notably, the Russians are quite happy the Shuttle launch went well, it takes some pressure off their underfunded Space Agency.
So, got $100 million for a quick trip to the ISS and around the moon? Fly me to the moon …

Hmmm I guess depending on how many people are willing to spend 100 million it could prove profitable LMAO I’m sure there’s a line around the block from TicketMaster now.

I like Jerry Pournelle’s idea of US gummint simply offering prizes for space accomplishments. Say $10Billion for a moon colony with X number of American inhabitants for 3 continuous years. Then get outa the way of good ole ingenuity and private enterprise.

Diane - I bet you there’d be some takers. I mean if I had a $1B, I would shell out $100M to go around the moon. (after lots of vodka mind you…)
David - you’re right. Give people enough incentive and it’ll get done. With Virgin’s space flights coming online in the next couple of years it’ll only be a few more before we get a commercial space station, then a space hotel, then a spaceport in space, then further travel from there…
