Marine Cleared of Murder
Monday May 30, 2005
This is a story that for one reason or another, seemingly hasn’t merited a mention on the news - which is a shame because it DID when the charges were pending… The marine 2nd Lt. Ilario Pantano was cleared of murder charges, and he did not deny killing the two Iraqis, because they made a menacing move towards him. To be fair, I need to mention that he DID empty 2 magazines into their bodies (60 bullets), to act as a deterrent to other insurgents. He left a note on their bodies, “No better friend, no worse enemy”, a Marine slogan. It is a sad day when we start to charge our soldiers with murder for defending themselves.

I agree, it really is ridiculous to send our soldiers to war then try to charge them with murder when they kill someone. What? He should have gone over there and when threatened offered to play patty-cake instead? About him emtying 60 bullets into their bodies, I can’t see how that makes it worse. Dead is dead, all he’s guilty of is wasting ammo.

I think it might have involved some sour-grapes too. Apparently he was turned in by a sergeant that he had removed from a position of authority in his platoon.

60 bullets sounds about the right amount in Europellets to weight their souls for the trip to hell.
One bullet or so each from a 1911M would have done the job, but such effective weapons/ rounds have been largely removed from our military’s equipment/arms.

Hehehe. Didn’t they move to the 5.56mm rounds because they “sprall” as they enter flesh, rather than just carrying on through?
